Grain & Bulk Solids Level Measurement

Silos and stockpiles are the hardest level application there is: airborne dust, an uneven, cone-shaped surface, long ranges and a vibrating, metallic wall. A wide beam reads the wall or the pile, not the true level.

01 · Challenges

Common Challenges

  • Dust during filling attenuates ultrasonic and some radar.
  • Uneven surface and side-wall returns cause false echoes.
  • Long range to the silo floor needs high signal-to-noise.
  • Beam angle must clear the wall — see our beam-angle and silo-wall distance guide.

80 GHz Radar — narrow beam through dust

The 80 GHz FMCW radar is purpose-built for solids: a 3° beam ignores dust and side walls, advanced echo processing locks onto the material surface, and range covers tall grain silos. For tuning tips on difficult silos, read our grain-silo tuning note.

03 · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dust block the radar?

No. At 80 GHz the beam is too narrow to be scattered by typical grain or flour dust, and the antenna self-cleans. Ultrasonic, by contrast, is strongly attenuated by dust.

How far from the wall should I mount?

Keep the beam clear of the wall over the full measurement range. Our beam-angle guide gives the minimum distance for your silo diameter and antenna.
