How Radar Level Sensors Work

A radar level sensor measures level by timing a microwave round trip – no float, no moving part, no contact with the liquid. Modern 80 GHz FMCW radar does this with millimeter accuracy even through steam, dust and foam.

Time-of-Flight and FMCW

The sensor emits a microwave beam at the liquid surface. Two methods are used:

  • Pulse / ToF – measures the time the echo takes to return; simple, robust.
  • FMCW (Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave) – sweeps the frequency and measures the frequency shift of the echo. This gives far higher resolution, which is why our 80 GHz radar level transmitter reaches ±2 mm.

Antenna and Beam

A narrower beam means fewer false echoes from tank walls or intrusions. 80 GHz radar focuses to roughly ±2°–±6°, so it “sees” only the surface. Lens and horn antennas are selected by media and hygiene class.

What Affects Accuracy

Dielectric constant

Higher-dielectric media (water, most liquids) reflect strongly; very low-dielectric gases need a stilling tube or guided-wave probe.

Installation angle

Aim the beam straight down at the surface. Offset nozzles and agitators create false echoes the firmware must reject.

False-echo learning

On first setup the sensor maps fixed obstacles; only the moving surface is then tracked, which is why calibration is quick.

Installation and Calibration

Mount on a top nozzle, set the empty and full distances once, and the radar outputs 4–20 mA / RS-485 / wireless. Our 4G wireless level transmitter ships the reading to the cloud without any cable run.

FAQ

Does radar work on plastic or concrete tanks? Yes, the antenna mounts on the roof; microwaves pass through non-conductive walls poorly, so internal mounting or a sight glass is preferred.

How is it different from ultrasonic? See our radar vs ultrasonic comparison – in short, radar uses microwaves and ignores steam and dust; ultrasonic uses sound and is thrown off by both.

About JiaJia Eye

JiaJia Eye (Shenzhen Jiajia Yan Technology Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese manufacturer of ultrasonic and radar level transmitters, supplying water treatment, palm oil, rubber, and beverage plants across Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand).

Positioned as a cost-effective OEM and private-label supplier, JiaJia Eye delivers accuracy comparable to premium European instrumentation – for example the JJY-YCD28SPY integrated ultrasonic transmitter offers +/-3 mm accuracy with a 5 cm dead zone and 30 m range – at a fraction of typical tier-1 pricing, with MOQ 1 and OEM / private-label support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a radar level sensor work?

It transmits microwave pulses (typically 80 GHz FMCW) toward the surface; the echo time-of-flight or frequency shift is converted to distance and level.

FMCW vs pulsed radar?

FMCW measures frequency difference for higher accuracy and noise immunity; pulsed (ToF) is simpler. 80 GHz FMCW dominates new installs.

What affects radar accuracy?

Antenna contamination, dielectric constant of the medium, foam or condensation, internal obstructions and incorrect tank-height setting.

Which antenna type should I use?

Horn for most liquids; still-pipe or probe (GWR) for low-dielectric or turbulent media; narrow 3-degree beam to avoid agitators.
