Radar vs Ultrasonic Level Sensor — Which Should You Choose?

Both radar and ultrasonic level sensors are non-contact, measure distance by time-of-flight, and fit most tanks and open channels. The difference is the wave: radar uses 80 GHz microwaves, ultrasonic uses sound. That one difference decides which media, accuracy and price class fits your site.

Our ultrasonic is the unusual one. A 5 cm blind zone and 30 m range put the JJY-YCD28SPY well ahead of typical off-the-shelf ultrasonic, which usually runs a ~20 cm blind zone and stops near 15 m. The tight near field lets you mount closer to the fill line and still read the whole tank; the 30 m reach covers deep silos a standard unit cannot.

Which One for Your Application

Choose Ultrasonic when…

The tank holds clean, still water or a mild liquid, the space above the liquid is open and vapor-free, and budget matters. Our integrated ultrasonic level transmitter gives ±3 mm over 30 m at a fraction of radar cost.

Choose Radar when…

There is steam, dust, turbulence, foam or an aggressive / low-dielectric medium, or you need the smallest blind zone and the longest life. Our 80 GHz FMCW radar level transmitter reads through all of it at ±1 mm.

Still unsure?

Send us the tank drawing, media and operating temperature. We specify radar vs ultrasonic per vessel and can mix both in one site via the 4G wireless gateway.

30-Second Decision Guide

Match the sensor to the vessel, not the brochureThree quick checks decide 90% of radar-vs-ultrasonic choices in the field.
01Vapor
Steam, mist or dust above the liquid?
Any of these attenuates sound — go radar. Microwaves pass through vapor and dust unaffected.
02Surface
Foam, turbulence or waves?
Sound needs a still, flat target. Radar tracks the true level through turbulence and light foam.
03Budget
Clean, calm, atmospheric tank?
Ultrasonic gives nearly the same accuracy at 1/2–1/3 of the price — the sensible pick when conditions are easy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Radar vs ultrasonic: which is better?

Choose ultrasonic for open, near-ambient vessels with clean air and a calm surface (lower cost). Choose radar for vapor, steam, dust, pressure/vacuum, foam or long range.

When should I choose ultrasonic?

Atmospheric water tanks, wastewater, reservoirs, irrigation – stable air, no heavy vapor, budget-sensitive.

When should I choose radar?

Steam or chemical tanks, pressurized/vacuum vessels, dusty silos, foaming liquids, long range or high accuracy.

Can ultrasonic replace radar to save cost?

On a clean water tank with no steam, yes – you get nearly the same accuracy for far less. On a steamy or dusty vessel, radar is the only reliable choice.

Does radar need a stilling tube?

Not for 80 GHz FMCW on most tanks; its narrow beam ignores wall reflections. Guided-wave radar uses a probe for solids and interface measurement.

What about cost and maintenance over time?

Ultrasonic is cheaper to buy and install; radar costs more but needs less maintenance in harsh conditions – often lower total cost of ownership.
