4G Solar Radar Level Transmitter for Off-Grid Tank Monitoring

Remote storage tanks — at farms, construction sites, rural water stations, and oilfields — sit far from power and WiFi. Running a cable or a cellular router to each one is expensive. A 4G solar radar level transmitter removes both problems: a small solar panel keeps it alive, and the 4G modem reports level to the cloud on its own.

Verified numbers for the JJY-YLB4S-47 (source: our own product page
/4g-wireless-level-transmitter/, checked 2026-10-08): 15 Ah battery paired
with a 5 V / 10 W solar panel, measuring ±2 mm over a 40 m range, and
about 60 days of operation with no sunlight at all. Housing is IP68,
rated −40 °C to 75 °C.

Why off-grid tanks are hard to monitor

Three constraints kill most monitoring setups in the field:

  • No grid power. A 24V wired sensor needs a trench or a generator.
  • No WiFi / Ethernet. Rural and industrial sites rarely have LAN.
  • Nobody on site. You find out the tank is empty after the pump ran dry.

A radar sensor measures without touching the liquid, so there is no float to jam or probe to corrode — a good fit when you cannot send a technician monthly.

How the 4G + solar architecture works

1. The 80GHz radar module measures distance to the liquid surface. 2. A low-power MCU averages readings and stores them locally. 3. On a scheduled wake cycle, the 4G modem pushes the value to a cloud endpoint over MQTT / HTTPS. 4. The cloud dashboard shows level, trend, and low-level alarms.

Because the modem sleeps between sends, a modest solar panel and a small battery cover the duty cycle: the upload interval is configurable from 5 minutes to 2 hours, so you trade reporting frequency against battery life per site.

Where this beats WiFi and LoRa

Option Needs power? Needs site LAN? Range
WiFi sensor Yes Yes ~50 m
LoRa gateway Yes (gateway) No km (line of sight)
4G solar No No cellular coverage

If your tank is inside cellular coverage but outside WiFi, 4G is the shortest path to “see the level from your phone.”

FAQ

Q: Will it work where there is no sun for a week? A: Yes. The 15 Ah battery powers the JJY-YLB4S-47 for about 60 days with no solar input at all; choose the panel size to suit your latitude and winter daylight hours.

Q: Do I need my own SIM card? A: No. Each unit ships with a factory-configured global roaming SIM card covering 100+ countries/regions, including 2 years of free data — you do not need to supply your own. The exact LTE band list varies by regional version; contact us to confirm the bands supported in your target market.

Q: How is the data secured? A: TLS transport to the cloud endpoint; device authenticated per-install.
