Chemical Container Level Monitoring: Removing a 0.05 m Interference Echo

You are here : Home > Radar & Ultrasonic Level Meter FAQ Hub > Radar Level Sensor Field Cases: Real Sites, Real Fixes > Chemical Container Level Monitoring: Removing a 0.05 m Interference Echo
Industry: transportation
Application: chemical container tank
Device: radar level transmitter
Firmware: 20260602
Symptom: 0.05 m interference echo

The problem

Site & symptom

A radar level transmitter was installed on a chemical container tank used in transport. The customer reported that the unit could not measure an accurate level.

What the field data showed

The sensor was picking up a close-range interference echo at 0.05 m. After running the echo-learning routine the data returned to normal – but as soon as the tank was pressurised the value jumped straight back to 0.05 m. To separate an instrument fault from an installation problem the customer powered up a second unit for comparison, which confirmed the cause: a close-range interference echo generated inside the container. When the unit was not facing the ceiling, the problem did not appear.

The installation

Radar level transmitter mounted on a chemical container tank for transport level monitoring (field case 2)
Field case 2 – the transmitter installed on the chemical container tank.

How we fixed it

Solution

Having confirmed that the fault came from the installation rather than the instrument, we asked the customer to switch the transmitter to suspended installation and enlarge the blind zone to 0.1 m, so the unit ignores the fixed reflection in front of the antenna.

Result

After the adjustment the transmitter detected the correct waveform and produced accurate level data.

Echo spectrum: before and after

Echo spectrum before adjustment showing the 0.05 m near-range interference echo (field case 2)
Before – the 0.05 m interference echo in the spectrum.
Echo spectrum after enlarging the blind zone to 0.1 m, showing the correct tank level (field case 2)
After – a correct waveform and an accurate tank level.

What this case teaches

  • A close-range echo produced by the container itself can be mistaken for the level.
  • The symptom can look intermittent: it may seem fixed after learning and reappear after a pressure cycle.
  • Comparing with a second unit is a fast way to separate an instrument fault from an installation problem.
  • Enlarging the blind zone to 0.1 m removed the interference echo – a small setting with a big effect.
